Weekly COVID-19 aviation update: European flight hours highest since March 2020
June 25, 2021
European capacity as measured by flight hours has hit its highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020, as airlines ramp up capacity across the continent and travel restrictions wind down.
Cirium weekly COVID-19 aviation industry update – June 25, 2021
Cirium’s data shows that on June 23, departing services from European airports comprised a seven-day average of 25,573 flight hours, surpassing the levels seen in the mild summer recovery last year, which peaked at 24,403 hours in late August.
It means capacity as measured by flight hours was the highest since March 20, 2020, when a seven-day average of 25,326 flight hours took place on departing services in Europe.
The data does, however, remain well below the 56,468 flight hours on departing services recorded on June 23, 2019, indicating the scale of the recovery that still faces the industry.
As measured by seats, the summer recovery remains just below the levels seen last summer, with a seven-day average of 2.09 million seats departing on June 23. This compares with a maximum of 2.1 million on August 28 last year.
Given that the number of departing seats has risen from below 1.5 million at the start of June, representing a growth of 39% in just over three weeks, it seems likely that capacity by seats will surpass last summer in the coming days.
Capacity in the block has been bolstered by the rollout of the EU’s digital travel certificate, which has meant that passengers who are vaccinated, have had COVID-19 or been recently tested are able to travel easily around the block, while incidence of COVID-19 has been greatly diminished by the rollout of vaccines.
The exception remains the UK, which retains significant travel restrictions on entry to the country.
