Ryanair Set To Cut Hundreds Of Jobs Amid Rising Costs, Lower Earnings

Wed, 31st Jul 2019 15:51

(Alliance News) - Budge airline Ryanair Holdings PLC is set to axe up to 900 jobs amid a drop in earnings due to higher fuel costs.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary told staff in a video message that the airline will do its best to minimise job cuts, but some were "unavoidable".

Ryanair is being hit by delays to expansion plans forced by the grounding of Boeing Co's 737 Max jetliner.

It is believed details of redundancies will be given by the end of August, with any cuts to be enforced later in the year.

Ryanair indicated earlier this month that it would trim operations, saying it expected to get no more than 30 of the 58 Max jets due from Boeing by next summer.

The airline this week reported a 21% fall in quarterly profits as overcapacity and a price war in Germany drove ticket prices lower.

IN BRIEF: Ryanair traffic rebounds in April from Covid and war effects

Ryanair Holdings PLC - Dublin-based budget airline - Flies 14.2 million passengers in April with a load factor of 91%, improved on both counts from 11.2 million passengers at 87% capacity in March. The company said it operated 82,600 flights in April. It noted that March traffic was hurt by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with 2,000 flights to and from Ukraine cancelled that month by airspace closures. By comparison, Ryanair flew only 1.0 million passengers in April of last year, amid continued Covid-19 restrictions at the time. On a rolling 12-month basis, Ryanair has carried 110.2 million passengers at an 83% load factor, up from 28.5 million at 71% in the 12 months to April 2021.
