Pearson to embed AI into products amid threat to education publishers

Tue, 09th May 2023 10:11

(Alliance News) - Pearson PLC on Tuesday said it has adopted a strategy for artificial intelligence and will embed the technology into its products in order to enhance teaching and learning.

The London-based education publisher said a number of projects are underway, with AI set to be embedded in its Workforce Skills, Mastering, MyLab, Pearson+ and English Language Learning products.

In Workforce Skills, the company said language models will create algorithms to assess global skill and occupation demands to recommend career paths to consumers.

Pearson said it it developing higher education generative AI tools to guide students, ahead of the autumn 'back-to-school' for its Mastering and MyLabs projects, while a generative AI tool will also be added to Pearson+, summarising video content and generating quizzes and practice problems.

Pearson's English Language Learning product will gain an open response assessment AI to offer real-time feedback on writing and speaking improvements.

Chief Executive Andy Bird said: "AI has played an important role across our product portfolio for many years. As generative AI develops, we expect it to create significant positive opportunities for Pearson, due to our unrivalled depth of content and data.

"Learners and educators place enormous trust in us so we have a responsibility to be thoughtful and considered in how we use this technology, whilst continuing to move at pace to enhance our products."

Pearson shares rose 3.3% to 844.80 pence each in London on Tuesday morning.

The stock is down 11% so far in 2023. It lost 15% on Tuesday last week after US peer Chegg Inc warned that AI software such as ChatGPT is hurting the number students who are signing up for its services.
