Sunday newspaper round-up: Scottish taxes, EU offensive, Tesco

Sun, 10th May 2015 16:26

Directors of Standard Life are preparing to issue a coded warning on the dangers of Scotland's tax regime diverging from the rest of the UK as business people fret over the fallout from the Scottish National Paty's landslide victory. - Financial TimesDavid Cameron will launch a 100-day policy offensive to kick-start his second term, accelerating his plans for a new deal with Brussels, cementing Tory control of the House of Commons and pushing through abolition of the Human Rights Act. The prime minister will take advantage of the honeymoon after his unexpected victory in the general election to drive through radical changes before the summer recess. - The Sunday TimesConsumer research giant Nielsen is poised to plunge into the £2bn auction for Dunnhumby, operator of Tesco's Clubcard loyalty scheme. Dave Lewis, Tesco chief executive, hired Goldman Sachs this year to sell the business, which analyses the data of nearly 1bn shoppers globally, as part of an ambitious plan to rehabilitate Britain's biggest supermarket chain. The $16bn company is understood to have expressed an interest in Dunnhumby but has not yet tabled an offer. - The Sunday TimesLibya's billion-dollar lawsuit against Goldman Sachs has been dealt a fresh setback as a power struggle at the top of its $67bn wealth fund sees two rival law firms pitted against each other in the London courts. - The Sunday TelegraphSirius Minerals believes it is edging closer to launching its fertiliser mine project in North Yorkshire. The mining company expects to tap the City for $1bn (£600m) of finance for the giant scheme this year. "The plan is now that we will be in a position to start work on the project before the end of the year if we get approvals," Chris Fraser, chief executive of Sirius, said. - The Sunday TelegraphLiz Kendall, the shadow health minister, today launches her attempt to become Labour leader, warning that the "future survival" of the party is at risk unless it starts trying to appeal to Conservative voters as well as the party's traditional supporters. In an interview with The Sunday Times, Kendall condemned the "truly terrible result" under Ed Miliband, which saw Labour reduced to its lowest number of MPs since 1983, and warned that the party has "far too little" to say to middle-class voters. - The Sunday TimesAfter centuries dominated by the atlnatic, and then the ascendancies of the Pacific Rim, it is the nations on the rim of the Indian Ocean that could dominate growth for the next generation. The next decade should at least see the ascendancy of India, and the long-delayed rise of east Africa, while the US and Europe siffer relative stagnation, and China's growth begins to peter out. - The Financial TimesThe activist shareholder urging John Menzies to consider splitting up will raise the ante at this week's annual meeting in Edinburgh by addressing other investors directly from the floor.- Scotsman on Sunday
