Beauty with infa being onshore is CAPEX and OPEX should be considerably lower
There are 2 proposed gas storage facilities in NW England both of which have a number of ongoing issues. The first one is the Preesall gas storage project owned privately by Halite which has fierce local opposition (even from their own local MP) possibly as the project is to be situated very near to a more populated area. There is also the potential issue of compulsory purchase orders and the proposed extension by the Govt of the Liverpool Bay special protection area for protected bird's.
The second project over in Morecambe bay also privately owned by Stag energy has issues too. In fact the main reason both have languished is down to the issue of funding hence why the project's are yet to be developed despite having been around for quite a number of years. They do not qualify for the PCI status, EU grant funding or the UK govt guarantee scheme either.
Infa on the other hand has all of this plus full local support which wouldn't have been possible without the passion and commitment of our very own Judith Tweed who is the community liaison for the project plus much more.
Yes both the Halite and Stag energy would be using the same thick salt bed on the other side of the Irish sea (of course they would be as this particular layer of salt stretches all the way from N.I over to Germany) however Infrastrata is also in a very strategic location allowing the potential supply of gas to the whole of Ireland and UK via the proposed reverse of the SNIP. With all planning consents, storage licences and environmental assessments alreasy in place Infa is good to go. Plus as Spud mentioned it is to be onshore resulting in much lower Capex and Opex. Infrastrata is to be Ireland's only gas storage facility and it's timing will be critical to coincide with the massive projected increase in gas demand in Ireland as they reduce their dependance on Oil, Coal and Peat over the coming years. The construction of Belfast gas power station and the Gas to the West expansion programme also continue to make great progress.
There is the argument that there will be a need for all 3 gas storage project's to be developed to help with security of supply in the coming years. However Infa is by far the most advanced and ready to go project and I imagine that the level of interest that has been generated by the major gas players and major funds is quite significant with Infa.
Good times coming finally for Infa - after over a decade in planning, design, delays and setbacks and more delays we can now say it's finally happening! Don't forget also the potential phase 3 and 4 of this project along with the revised 40yr life and potential uses for our storage facility. All these things together really do add a new dimension to the sheer potential here....GLA
Very very very good post Mcadder! !
Thank you mcaddder. Always a bit of a stumble around in the dark with a new investment. Fascinating the salt stretches that far, I love stuff like that.
