@RogerThatSir 18-24 months hold, not 5 years.
I think there was potential a week ago for the UK to lock down pubs and restaurants, it sounded like Boris had been talked into it but then Rishi Sunak took him aside and explained how the country couldn't afford it (thank god). Added to this a number of scientists including Professor Gupta from Oxford university wrote to Boris offering a different view from SAGE that the best thing to do would be to try and protect the vulnerable as much as possible but keep the rest of the country open. This swayed Boris to only do a curfew. Now I believe they will watch France and Spain, who are 4-6 weeks ahead and have an 7-8 fold decrease in the number of people dieing per recorded case compared to last time.
Boris recently said when scientists pressured a lockdown that "there are other scientists who believe our measures go too far" and Rishis budget today by not continuing furlough and stating that "we must learn to live with the virus" I believe signals a shift in UK policy away from generalized lockdown measures.
@Hosai
Yes I heard about that advice to BoJo.
Believe it is highly significant.
That advice being - it doesn't matter if the infection rate rises, the virus should be allowed to just run its course.
What matters is shielding vulnerable demographics.
I.e. no wide spread lockdown, even if there is a spike in cases.
On the whole the virus only kills people with some time of pre existing condition be that old age, obesity, certain ethnic groups, other health issues. These would be minority shielded groups.
In short there is little point to locking down a large chunk of society who even if infection wouldn't come to harm. Best result for most people and the economy.
Agreed Ocean...what's really bizarre is according to ONS figures for the last 2-3 months there has been around 5-10 times as many people dying from flu. I'm also still confused by people who say protecting the vulnerable is "impossible", yet apparently locking down a whole country is fine and possible.
I know people working in the NHS, actual Covid deaths are much less than reported, their is a real culture being driven from somewhere that wherever possible a death should be classified as Covid related. Probably to justify expenses. I.e. come is for a heart transplant and due during surgery - it's a covid death if someone heart you cough
@Mark_rs - good post... Johnny bolox take note!
@oceanpassage
I've got family in Mexico who told me that he family members of a deceased person ask the doctor to put on
the death certificate that their loved oned died of coronavirus solely because they get paid a lumpsum from
the Mexican government. Also, the doctor who dealt with the fake coronavirus death gets paid danger money
bonus. So, since its Mexico, this goes on very often a way to make extra money for both sides. Life is cheap.
