No trades for two weeks..wow! I don't really understand the deferred shares thing either mate, just think it's a wild card share and in with a fair chunk to see what happens. Bought some MXF today on yield and sold more carillion as they've gone beyond my expectations. Not particularly happy with the paper losses all over the p/f all of a sudden but have taken profits to maximise yield in the main account and specced up with a few average downs on a few in the sipp. Glad to hear things up over the pond cuki. The old girl is normally just behind clln so either one's too high or the other too low..hmmmm. Catch up tomorrow all.
Quite a bounce for the old girl - will she soon be breaking the £3 barrier? Generally some positive signs after the sharp drop. Is the drop over? Dow up 0.47% tonight - not a dramatic jump - will a change in direction be confirmed tomorrow? lego - just popped in for a cup of Horlicks before bed.
What where those viy deffered shares about?
Well she is a defiant old girl..having another sniff around the £3...go on do it (just for me).....James did you flog any viy today?....I almost did but I have such a small holding think I will just keep in the bottom drawer for now.....no trades from me now for almost a fortnight.....
Cheers for the endorsements of my longevity here!! Another down day overall I see. Tinkered a few around first thing to gain a tiny overall yield advantage otherwise a bit of a 'bunker day' I fear!! Hope everyone okay.
You're right thistle, it's knowing James is always reliably here that makes this board homely. Still, it gladdens the heart to see your name on the board.
Its like a game of snakes & ladders!...glad to hear alls well with yours cuki and no losses! Well done...James nice to know I can always find you on here...when everyone else has left the building always good to see a familar face!
Hello old friend, hope you and family are well. Trust you've banked some nice profits over the past year - it was a good one. I'm fine thanks, had a good year with all sales at a profit so can't complain.
Good to see you posting thistle, hope life treating you well. Yes its a funny old game we play in and I agree we so often fly by the seat of our pants and no one gets top or bottom for that matter but we all strive to maximise advantage wherever we see the opportunities and as AA points out know the risks we take...importantly we take those risks rather than just talk about it! There's so many examples of wishing we had as well as wishing we hadn't but I suspect the latter is more often the case! Most things find their level and most of what we do is follow our instincts as it's our own hard earned on the line.
Its impossible to predict the presise time to lock in profits..but a profit is better than a loss and a small loss is better than a big loss..if we could get it right all the time then we would indeed be wealthy..I suppose its all about risk and reward..how many times have we, day after day watched a share gently climb the chart only to see it fall right back to the first rung of the ladder in one foul swoop....
Went ahead and posted before I'd finished!...that's technology for you...James I'm a bit like you fly by the seat of my pants most of the time!...sometimes it works and other times it doesn't ..haven't always got time to stop and look at support and resistance levels...a lot of stuff is news driven!...can turn either way in an instant!...trust you are both well “The trend is your friend, until the end when it bends.”
“It's far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price.” Warren would always ...
Well said James. Short term fluctuations are very difficult to predict however certain sayings are worthy of note such as, 'The trend is your friend' and in the words of Warren Buffett:- 'Look at market fluctuations as your friend rather than your enemy; profit from folly rather than participate in it.' 'We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy when others are fearful.' 'Rule No.1: Never lose money. Rule No.2: Never forget Rule No.1'
Thankfully I didn't chuck the kitchen sink at them(hmv) as I did woollies a few years back...that was my worst after rbs of course! I do look at charts to try and get a feel for the flow of things and particularly the zigzag effect which implies there's a zig after a zag,RDSB being a cracking example of the one year graph but in isolation I don't believe any method can be relied on as we all know the only predictable thing about share prices is their unpredictablility!

LOL My daughter eats the sugar too. She's been away all week. I miss her. goodnight
First verse "Address to a Haggis" Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face, Great chieftain o the puddin'-race! Aboon them a' ye tak your place, Painch, tripe, or thairm: Weel are ye worthy o' a grace As lang's my arm. Translation Fair and full is your honest, jolly face, Great chieftain of the sausage race! Above them all you take your place, Stomach, tripe, or intestines: Well are you worthy of a grace As long as my arm.
Well you know how a short seller would reply don't you.Who wants to buy/read a book in a waterstones cafe that somebody else has fingered lol. Realistically though you make money on shares to be able to frequent cafes. Some wouldn't hand over £2.00 for a tea or coffee out of a tight family budget. In my own case, I like strong tea and a pot of tea in a cafe is usually what I call hot water with a floating weak single tea bag. You can read the papers on line these days lol look at the falling circulation for Scotland's two quality papers the Herald and the Scotsman. My English sister-in-law was telling me asda stocks nice "Scotch" black pudding. I like Stornoway black pudding and the use of its name has been protected recently but also some of the spicier ones Black Puddin' Bertha she's the queen of northern soul http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-nvpU8sE7U Good night I'm having a little dram in commemororation of Burns.
With haggis and black pudding there must be some Scottish blood there. Enjoy
Wee, sleekit, cowran, tim'rous beastie, O, what a panic's in thy breastie! Thou need na start awa sae hasty, Wi' bickering brattle! I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee, Wi' murd'ring pattle! I'm truly sorry Man's dominion Has broken Nature's social union, An' justifies that ill opinion, Which makes thee startle, At me, thy poor, earth-born companion, An' fellow-mortal!
Cheers to all.
You're an awful man James - not taking notice of the main indices. You've had lots of experience over the years and so I guess you know the ropes. I'm still a chartist by nature - I guess we all have our different approaches. I was expecting a normal January uplift through to May especially with things improving in the developed world but a bad January doesn't bode well. A certain amount of volatility can be expected so good luck with your timing. Enjoy the game.
